Woodcarving 101:

Discover the rewarding world of woodcarving in our beginner’s classes designed for someone who has never carved before. We supply everything and all we ask is you bring your hands to carve one of our simple lessons that will send you home with new skills and something functional for you to show your family and friends. Our method is an easy simple way to start making your own wood carved heirlooms today.

Courses are held for three full-day sessions, once per week. Take 1 or take them all. We supply everything you need:

Loaner set of tools, sharp and ready to go.

Choice of a simple project that can be finished in one to three sessions.

Prepared carving blank, ready to carve.

Each student receives personal one on one guidance from professional woodcarver Eric Bunn.

Discussion of finishing techniques that can be accomplished at home.

There is a small fee to cover the cost of wood based on project choice.

The project choices are designed to teach you fundamentals using simple shapes and include the following must have skills:

How to use a variety of woodcarving tools.

Simple stropping techniques to show you how to keep your tool’s edges razor sharp.

How to carve properly, relative to the grain direction of the wood.

A simple reductive process designed to accomplish any carving from the block of wood to the finished shape.

Examples of some simple project choices that can be accomplished in 1 to 3 sessions. All carvings use easy to carve Basswood. We will help you choose a project based on the number of days you sign up for:

Leaf shaped candy dish.

Simple carved wooden bowl.

Wooden Spoon, ornamental or functional.

Simple Wall Shelf with carving embellishment.

Sign board with house numbers.

Wooden Fruit; Relief Plaque or in the Round.

Relief Plaque with simple leaf-pattern. (Oak, Maple, Grape Leaf)

Woodcarving 102:

The student will take a deeper dive into the fine art of woodcarving in Woodcarving 102. Students may work in Relief or In the Round.

Courses are held for three full-day sessions, once per week. Take 1 or take them all. Additional classes may be added based on demand:

Here are some of the subjects that will be covered in Woodcarving 102:

Thorough understanding of tool sharpening specific to woodcarving:

oProper use of sharpening stones

oHand Stropping for a quick keen edge while you work.

oPower sharpening and buffing using motorized grinding and polishing wheels.

oTips and tricks to handle the large variety of tools required for woodcarving.

Introduction into softwoods and hardwoods that may be used for woodcarving.

Deeper dive into “Carving in the Round” based on students project choice.

Tips and tricks for planning proper paper patterns for use in beginning a wood carving.

Creating woodcarvings using a model; a must for Carving in the Round.

oDifferent methods for model creation or duplicating an existing model.

oDesigning a proper base for clamping the carving blank in a carving arm.

oPointing and measuring system to transfer measurements from the model to the wood.

Want to purchase a set of carving tools of your own. We can help you design the set based on the type of carving you want to accomplish and point you in the direction of where to purchase quality woodcarving tools, both US made and European.

Some or most of the previous subjects will be covered based on the student’s choice of carving subject and whether carving in relief or in the round.

Students may choose to work in Basswood or other hardwoods suitable for the project they are working on. Preparing the carving blank will be included in the 102 class.

Need a jump start on a project that you have designed? We can get you started! One may choose to use the 102 class to begin a woodcarving that may be finished at home. If carving at home is not possible, consider using the shop at NJSOW by purchasing some open shop-time to complete your project. Use your own tools or use ours.

NJSOW also offers private lessons for more complex work.
